I’ve decided to self-publish Spectacular Bid: The Last Superhorse of the Twentieth Century after several agents told me horse racing books were not popular right now. I felt like the Beatles being told by Decca that boy bands were not in vogue anymore.
So I’m doing it all myself – hiring editors, graphic designers, marketing pros – all in an effort to at least make back the money I’ve spent on this book. If I make more, that’s even better.
Of course, all authors would love to have a best seller, and that’s my long-term wish – gotta shoot for the stars, right? – but I am being sensible, knowing that it will sell modestly. All I need to do is keep the firest stoked and ride the wave for as long as I can. That’s what marketing is all about.
